Stevie Ray Vaughan Named One Of The Greatest Guitarists Of All Time - Rolling Stone

Stevie Ray Vaughan is included in Rolling Stone's new list of the 100 Greatest Guitarists Of All Time. Here is an excerpt:

"Texas' Stevie Ray Vaughan demanded your attention. He had absorbed the styles of just about every great blues guitarist – plus Jimi Hendrix and a lot of jazz and rockabilly – and his monster tone, casual virtuosity and impeccable sense of swing could make a blues shuffle like 'Pride and Joy' hit as hard as metal. Vaughan was recognized as a peer by the likes of B.B. King and Eric Clapton, and despite his 1990 death in a helicopter crash, he's still inspiring multiple generations of guitarists."

I will never forget meeting Stevie the year before Texas Flood was released. I had NO idea who he was and met him at a guitar shop. The next year, we caught him at The Bronco Bowl in Dallas and I have been a fan EVERY since. I remember listening to Hendrix over and over again and irritating my friends and band mates, then I heard Stevie was the same way. When I first heard him play Voodoo Chile (Slight Return) and Manic Depression, and Third Stone, I knew my mouth hung open. I knew that I was in the presence of greatness. You don't forget that! Now, if the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame will get off their butts and realize that Stevie belongs beside the other great musicians, he will finally get the recognition he so rightly deserves!

He is my favorite musician of all timer. Period. I listen to him daily and his music has really taught me how to play guitar. I don't think of a better guitarist that one could learn from. He played perfectly - slow or fast - always from the heart. Always original and had un uncanny way of turning the old songs into something new and original each time he walked on stage. He is loved my many. I miss this guy and I never met him. Through his music, he bared his soul to the world in such generous way you can't help but have it resonate inside you in an unexplainable way. To me, Stevie will always be the greatest and not a day goes by that I hear a part of one of his solos that blows me away. He inspires so so many to pick up the guitar and learn the blues. He was pure magic and the REAL DEAL. His strength showed in his recovery and his music rose to an even higher place. We all still hear you down here, Stevie. Keep on rockin' us from the heavens my brother. We miss you.

SRV is my number one greatest guitarists of all time! I listen to his music at least 4 times a week. I can't go more than a week without listening. I guess I am a SRV junky. His music soothes my soul. God only takes the good ones Sad

As Eric Clapton said...Stevie was like one of those Surfi (India) guys....one hand pointing up, one hand pointing down....the smoothest guitarist I've ever seen or heard. It just flowed down from heaven and through him....I was lucky enough to meet and play with him in Toronto in the 80's...one of the highlights of my life as a guitarist......I miss him as well, every time I listen to an album or watch a vid or concert......

He is easily in my top 3 greatest guitarists of all time! Still miss him and his music very much! I saw him a month before the plane crash, I will never forget that concert!

Saw him many times back in the mid-1980's, his Hendrix was astounding and unreal. Never equalled. Loved it when he did Jazz and swing as well.

Still have some early concerts on tape somewhere, will have to revisit them
